Terror manifests in numerous forms. Sometimes it's a cursed doll or a spirit-infested building. Other times it's a restless spirit revealing its presence. Yet the most frightening form of horror typically separate from a thing or a spot, but an individual. Sometimes, the most frightening creature isn't lurking under your bed. It dwells in your thoughts.
The Inner Demons of Aronofsky's Classic
This is the case with the director's year 2000 cult classic Requiem For a Dream, observing its 25-year mark. While certain viewers claim it isn't a terror flick, many maintain it certainly qualifies. Certainly not, it lacks a dark presence pulling someone out of bed in the evening, or a Ouija pointer being pushed across a Ouija board by unseen hands. However Requiem For A Dream focuses entirely on the demons that live inside of us, and the terrible actions individuals possessed by substance abuse inflict upon themselves — and people they care about — in their quest to survive.
The Protagonist's Downfall
The film introduces main character the young addict as he's attempting to steal a television from his aging parent, Ellen Burstyn's character. It's obvious Sara loves her son, yet during that scene they're introduced, Harry's inner demons are already making themselves known. Sara has locked herself inside a small room to hide from Goldfarb, who wants to sell the television for funds so he can get his hands on the movie's central foe: the narcotic.
Goldfarb's stare are dilated, frantic, pupils blown. His top is saturated with moisture from drug withdrawal. Sara peeks using the lock opening in the closet, watching. This is not her sweet, handsome, loving son. This is the awful entity that comes out of him occasionally. Sara realizes if she waits sufficiently, the chaos will pass, and her true child will return with her.
This fails to be the premier instance the young man has hocked his parent's set. To avoid the continuous taking, she's chained the TV to the heating unit, and possesses the opening tool to the padlock with her in the closet. Upon Goldfarb finding this, he instantly follows a strategy from the usual psychological aggressor's manual, yelling, "Jesus, what's your intention? You tryin' to compel me to ruin my parent's television? And damage the heater as well, and possibly blow up the complete home, Ma? Is that your objective?"
The mother quietly slides the key to the security device beneath the entrance.
It's clear Goldfarb experiences remorse, yet his shame is dominated by the anxious suffering from severe drug craving. The moment he transports the dated set outdoors, where his best friend Tyrone has been anticipating, any thoughts of shame vanish. After dragging the TV halfway across the city, the two friends sell it for money. Viewers don't observe them obtain the drug, and the word "heroin" fails to be said out loud during the whole movie. All we get are some quick tight frames of heroin being prepared in a small container, then injected. A mysterious sound breathes out. The devil within Goldfarb is satisfied.
For now.
Sara's Parallel Struggle
Simultaneously, the unfortunate mother has journeyed across town to get her entertainment system returned, and quickly appears obvious that she experiences a bit of an addiction of her own. Because her partner left and Harry changed, Sara seeks comfort in eating and watching for solace. Aside from Harry's inconsistent visits and the periods she dedicates outdoors sunbathing with fellow females in her living facility, Sara doesn't get out much. The TV acts as her view to the outside world, and she's especially fond for a strange gameshow-slash-infomercial hosted by a diet expert called Tappy Tibbons. She dedicates long periods eating sweets and viewing the program, where random viewers are occasionally selected, receiving funds and a possibility to participate in the program, that likewise acts as an ad for the expert's slimming aids.
Eventually, Sara obtains a telephone message notifying her she's been selected to appear on a gameshow, which constitutes the most important announcement she has received over an extended period. She immediately establishes an objective: She wants to wear the scarlet outfit she dressed in for her son's graduation ceremony, allowing her to dress in it during filming while recording. When she can't get the outfit's back zipped, she determines to lose some weight. She attempts dietary changes, soon feels discouraged. At the advice from a companion, the mother visits a physician, who promptly provides her with energy-increasing medicine for size reduction.
Ambitions and Ruin
Harry and Tyrone, nevertheless, are working on individual goals. The scheme is to get ahold of excellent drugs, cut it with something to extend its quantity beyond its normal amount, {and
