As Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching behind her. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every part of you would signal you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams attending to dozens of victims.

Collective Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the scene of the incident becoming a temporary hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance rushing into the surf to save people needing help.

After the attack, messages of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of lifeguards later shared a statement, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and support. We are touched by the kindness for our responders,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the shooting started right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” said a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in ensuring our iconic beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
