Cancellieri Demonstrates Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Return

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
