US Military Conducts Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
According to a senior military spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
