At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have since been recovered

Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
